My Platform
In the pandemic, my priority is keeping both our students and our teachers safe. If the numbers justify closing the schools again, I will make the tough decisions necessary. I know how difficult this is for the students and the parents. I had to switch my work hours for several months when my daycare closed and even today I have been relying on my mother for childcare. I do not think there are right decisions during this time. Every choice has risks and we have to decide how much of a risk we are comfortable with.
In-person schooling is much, much better if we are able to do so safely. Masks, social distancing, limiting class size, and thorough cleaning should be enough if the community transmission numbers don’t get excessively high.
What I Believe
I believe in supporting both the high-achieving students as well as the low-achieving students. All of our students should be able to get an education that gives them the opportunity to learn. I know that it can be difficult when students all have different abilities and learning styles, but limiting class sizes and giving teachers appropriate resources can make it easier.
Extracurricular activities are important. Sports teach teamwork, good sportsmanship, and perseverance. More academic activities like Debate or Mock Trial teach speaking skills and improve confidence. Schools should offer opportunities to all students and help them fulfill their interests.
Students should feel safe at school. They should be heard. No student should be discriminated against for gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or economic status. I will safeguard the rights of our students.
Why Run for School Board?
Shortly after moving to Westport, I noticed there were no candidates on the ballot for the Westport seat on the Waunakee school board. This seemed very sad to me and I decided that I should help out when I could. This year has obviously been very difficult for everyone, but it did seem like the right time to use my background to assist. While I am no expert in virology, I have been doing a lot of reading and I hope that I can help make good decisions.
